We always have work planned to improve the fishing along the river and often carry out this work in partnership with other national and local organisations.
Our members "pitch in" alongside these partners, so work is typically jointly delivered. A For example, our recent collaboration with the Wild Trout Trust and the EA involved raising the river bed with fresh gravel and improving the stretch as fish habitat. This year we will continue the work of bringing light into over-shaded areas in other beats, in partnership with the North West Kent Countryside Partnership, to encourage the growth of ranunculus (water crowfoot), a vital food source for insects, fish and other wildlife
The club`s longer-term ambition is to restore a self-sustaining population of wild brown trout along our beats.
The Club has developed an environmental stewardship action plan, which it updates annually. This plan provides the overview of priorities that the club considers relevant to ensuring that the club focuses its limited resources on key areas for development.
We undertake regular monitoring to help maintain a healthy river habitat. This involves controlling invasive species such as Himalyan Balsam, Burr reed and mink, carrying out insect surveys as an indicator of pollution, and monitoring the quality and chemical consistency of the waters.
The legacy of many water mills on the River Darent means it is an ‘engineered’ river with some canalised sections. Our projects are working towards restoring gravel runs, pool and riffle sequences and counteracting the low river flows in summer months.
There will always be a warm welcome on the work parties. These are being held on the following dates in 2024.(Please click the link below)
All will start at 9.30 and finish around 12.30. The club relies on members’ participation to maintain the beats to a high standard, so we can all enjoy our fishing. The location will depend on the members attending on each day and the work that needs to be done on particular beats. Please be understanding if we need to cancel or change dates due to the weather or other unforeseen circumstance. We may also add work parties as the season progresses. A lot of the work parties will involve getting in the river. If you are not happy to do in-river work, please let one of the river managers know.
The club seeks professional advice in the management of the fishery and improving the environment. Reports commissioned from various professional bodies are available on the link below:
Projects are a major way of enhancing the river and its environment. The club has worked in partnership with others and some of the river work projects are detailed on the link below:
